Come January, Girls returns. Here's hoping that as the show's creator, Lena Dunham, continues to grow up, her characters will, too. Or, at the very least, perhaps they'll become slightly less self-involved.

Girls castGirls returns to HBO in January, and we've got the Season 2 teaser. Granted, it's not so much a teaser as a video set to music that has a weird "urban jungle" feel to it, with the cast making faces and wandering around Brooklyn. Still, it's creating buzz for the show's return.

What should you expect from the second season of Lena Dunham's Girls? That's rough.

First, you have to keep in mind that the twentysomething girls appearing on the show aren't exactly ordinary. At best, they're rough configurations of a few extreme possibilities. Do you have parents who can afford to fund a decent apartment, even in Brooklyn, and also pay all your other bills? Probably not. Would you be able to tell the difference between cocaine and weed? Most likely. Would you ever leave your friends hanging out at an abortion clinic while you got drunk and hooked up with some guy in a bar? Who wouldn't, right?Girls Lena Dunham

On the other hand, there are moments of relatability amongst the characters, especially in the relationship department. Some of us have experienced the claustrophobic, overwhelming love that Marnie experiences with Charlie. We can understand her desire to flee, no matter how absolutely adorable he is. We've also experienced the opposite of that. We've been pushed and pulled around by guys who may not be awful humans, but who are just as floundering and unsure as the rest of us. Maybe not all of us can relate to falling for our employer's listless husband who's twice our age, but some of us probably can.

Expectations are cruel, you know.

However, here's what viewers from last season might be hoping for, at the very least. Shoshana must date Ray, who turned out to be a sweetie in "The Crackcident." Marnie needs to either fully let go of Charlie or finally come to terms with the fact that he loves her more and that's OK. Hopefully, Hannah and Adam will also be able to get themselves together and have a functional relationship. If not, they'll need to move on and find new people. And Jessa? Jessa needs to keep her knees together. Finally, everyone is hoping the girls of Girls can become slightly less self-centered.
