But did that drama almost drive the family's patriarch, Kody Brown, to throw in the towel on the hit TLC reality series? It turns out it did.
In a clip from the family's tell-all special, set to air on Sunday, he reveals that an on-air fight with this third wife, Christine, was what drove him nearly to the point of giving up.
"I literally started talking to the family the week after that aired," Kody explained. "I started talking about how we can get out of this show. I was dead serious. I had had enough."
The reasons for the fight with Christine were twofold: Kody made inflammatory comments about his wives' PMS, saying it makes them "insane," and then said, during a confessional interview on the show, that he wished he had had longer courtships with his wives, especially Christine, and that a more in-depth courtship process would have made their relationships stronger. It's easy to see why Christine was so upset by the remarks.

"I hate all of this so bad," she said, fighting back tears. "I feel like you're just always slamming how we came to be."
Sister Wives has been on the air since 2010, and it took until earlier this season to get Kody to the point of being ready to give up. That's a pretty good run, when you think about it.
During the tell-all special, Kody apologizes for some of his remarks, especially what he said about his four wives' PMS.
"I'm sorry that I didn't understand it well enough," he says. "And I'm sorry that it becomes a very offensive and polarizing thing. I actually apologized to Christine about this whole experience, but the PMS subject — in spite of being married for so many years — was a new problem to me. And so, when it became a real thing to me, it was a place where I was very insensitive about it."
