There is some speculation that Diane may be hanging up her mic.
Diane Sawyer has been a staple in the national news for decades, the past four as the anchor for ABC World News, but is it possible she will be retiring soon? According to the New York Daily News, a source said it is a very real possibility.
“She has discussed with a few close friends and some people at ABC that she is seriously considering retiring,” the source reportedly said. “She said she’ll be ready to hang it up not long down the road. She loves work and what she does and has endless energy, but she’s overwhelmed with personal problems and she is thinking about leaving to take care of her family.”
The source also reported that Sawyer’s mom is battling an illness, which may add to the decision.
“Diane has been going home for long weekends for years every couple of weeks, and that has not been new,” says the source. “She doesn’t have any plans to be taking off any time.”
But even with those reported trips, the newspaper said she is still focused on her job, and everyone there.
“No one wants to see her going through a rough time,” the source told the newspaper. “She’s the nicest woman. If it’s a co-worker’s birthday, she’ll throw a party. Anything to show everyone a good time.”
But ABC said Sawyer is not ready to throw in the towel quite yet.
“That’s a bunch of nonsense as we made clear and Diane’s plans for 2013 haven’t changed in any way,” a rep for ABC told the New York Daily News.
Later, ABC opened up more about the issue, this time to MediaBistro.com.
“That is not true,” ABC News SVP Jeffrey Schneider told the TV insider website. “And had the Daily News actually asked us if Diane was considering retiring we would have told them yesterday that it wasn’t true.”
