23 hysterical thoughts I had while watching the Beaches remake

$

0

Lifetime's revival of Beaches starring Idina Menzel and Nia Long aired last night and if I'm being honest, I cried 23 times. Here's the inner dialogue I had with myself while bawling my way through the TV movie:

Opening credits: I consider this a warm-up cry. Like stretching before a marathon. Also, they are showing images of beaches.

More: Lifetime's Beaches remake is nice and nothing more

Minute 4: Oh no. I just realized Bette Midler is not going to be in this. Certainly a weep-worthy moment. Maybe we’ll get a cameo? Sure, Idina Menzel and Nia Long are great, but the 1988 Beaches could have just been called, Bette Midler Does Awesome Stuff And Then Her Friend Dies.

Image: Giphy

Minute 6: I hate to say it, but it already feels like the story is being rushed, and the script doesn’t have the charm or subtly of the original Beaches. Show, don’t tell, Lifetime Beaches reboot! As a writer, you’re making me tear up.

Minute 8: Awww, the two girls are communicating through AOL Messenger as they grow up. I am filled with nostalgia. I would have cried even more if they had added modem noises.

Idina Menzel is singing for the first time: What a magical, tear-inducing voice. I weep into my wine for you, Idina. And she’s not even signing “Wind Beneath My Wings” or “Let It Go.”

Minute 15: They kept the lovely original scene where the two women sing Christmas carols in their shitty apartment, through the little window that separates their twin beds. It’s nothing less than magical all over again.

First commercial: I just remembered that there’s going to be commercials. Lots of Lifetime Movie commercials about mops and tampons and other, upcoming Lifetime movies. Definitely tearing up.

During an ad for milk and being a mom: Okay, I usually wouldn’t cry during this, but I am all warmed up. It’s not even a commercial for a certain brand of milk, just milk in general. Pull it together!

First friend fight: And it’s over a man! They really need to hurry up and resolve this quickly. You only have like 90 minutes together, and that includes milk commercials! Don’t waste your time quarreling. Remember the beach? The photo booth?

Image: Ramweb

Minute 31: They changed the name of Hillary’s love interest from Michael to Bryan, with a y, for so reason. So sad! Waterworks.

Funeral scene numeral uno: Hillary’s dad has kicked the bucket, but not before making her promise to give up her dream of being an ACLU lawyer and following in his corporate attorney footsteps. I guess I’m a little sad.

More: The most heartbreaking GIFs from the Beaches trailer

Minute 39: They’re not going to do the Broadway musical brazier song in the reboot! A true tragedy.

Friend fight two: This is the big one. CC is in a marriage of convenience with CC’s old love! Hillary is following someone else’s dream instead of hers! CC wasn’t there for Hillary during her big life milestones, and got her salt and pepper shakers for her wedding gift! Oh, good lord, these are some low blows. CC just called Hillary a bitch! My emotions can’t handle it.

When CC and John Pierce break up: There’s nothing wrong with the relationship except that they have grown apart irreconcilably forever. I really need a Bette Midler cameo pick-me-up right now. Maybe she’ll jump out of a closet?

When Hillary and Bryan break up: Hillary leaves her beach house early to return home to her husband, but Bryan-not-Michael is caught at home making breakfast for another woman. Being caught breakfast-making is much worse than being caught love-making some reason. I’m crying both because it’s super sad and also because they cut the amazing, “That’s my robe,” line that appears in the original.

When Idina Menzel sings the first sad song of the movie: And it has been juxtaposed with a montage of Hard Times for both women. There’s something in my eye. And also in my other eye. They are tears. Lots and lots of tears.

Arthritis commercial: No excuses for this. I don’t even know anyone who has it.

Minute 68: Hillary’s baby is born and then CC starts singing is singing “I’ll Stand By You.” Then Hillary collapses on a staircase because she has a terminal illness. I can’t exactly tell, but I think the “you” that CC is singing about is Hillary. I need a new box of tissues.

Minute 81: Hillary just got the bad news that she has a rare heart diease. It’s fatal, and the chances of finding a donor are low. Wait, did that doctor just say that Type O blood is rare? Does she not know that Type O is the Universal Donor type, compatible with any blood type? Did no one on the set of the movie catch this goof? Not even the camera guy? I am weeping for the ignorance of the world.

Friend Fight four: CC confront Hillary about giving up on life before her life is even over (which will be pretty shortly). This one is better than the original. Nia Long brings it to this scene. I cry because you cry, Nia.

More: 16 parenting lessons we learned from watching Lifetime movies

Okay, 15-minute crying jag: Hillary and CC return to the beach house with Hillary’s little girl Tori. There’s talk about motherhood (sob) and life (sob) and friendship (sob). There’s a scene where they look through old photos. You know I am going to cry all through an old photos scene.

Minute 110: Finally, CC sings “Wind Beneath My Wings” and Hillary dies. Flashbacks to youth and good times. I don’t want to say I was looking forward to this, but I kind of was. It’s like the scary parts of horror movies. You shut your eyes and scream, but this was your idea in the first place, and you love it.

Final scene: The movie seems to have gone so fast, maybe because it was 35 minutes shorter than the original. As CC takes one final look at the photo booth photos, and becomes Tori’s new mom, I can’t help but think about all of special moments in the original that lost their magic in the remake. Or about how I was going to make popcorn to go with my wine, but then forgot. Or about how there was no Midler cameo.

Closing credits: I just realized I’m going to have to stay up two more hours watching the original Beaches. I’m tearing up just thinking about the opening credits.

Suits Season 6 photos tease an unpredictable time for Specter Litt

$

The first half of Suits Season 6 came to a shocking close in September 2016 when Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) announced she was not only leaving New York City, but also the firm she helped build. How can there be a Pearson Specter Litt without Pearson?

More: Jessica's Suits Season 6 departure was perfect

That's something viewers are going to see play out when Suits returns with the rest of Season 6 come Wednesday, Jan. 25. They will also watch Mike figure out what he wants to do career-wise now that he is out of prison, see Rachel struggle with whether or not she wants to remain at Specter Litt, and of course, Harvey and Louis attempting to keep the firm afloat without Jessica in tow.

Fans are going to have to wait until the winter premiere to see just how different Suits will now be without the extremely talented Torres and her kick-ass character, so until then here are some photos from the premiere to tide us over.

It's unclear what exactly is happening in each photo, but why don't we take the time to speculate? Who doesn't love a good session of theorizing over TV?

1. Katrina is back

Suits, Louis and Katrina
Image: Shane Mahood/USA Network

Louis once again comes face to face with Katrina, played by Amanda Schull. Seeing as Katrina no longer works with her former mentor, there's a good chance this particular interaction is an uncomfortable one. Executive producer Aaron Korsh told TV Line in December 2016 that Katrina's return is "pretty directly connected to the loss of Jessica."

For those who can't recall, she now works for Rachel's father, Robert Zane. Maybe, just maybe, Katrina is approaching Louis because they are going to take Robert's deal he presented to Jessica in the Season 6A finale. Remember, Robert offered to merge his firm with the former Pearson Specter Litt. Be sure to notice that Katrina is holding papers in her hand, which could be for Louis and Harvey to sign. Or they could always reject Robert's offer and try to save the firm on their own. Would that really surprise anyone?

2. Harvey yells at Louis — again

Suits, Harvey and Louis
Image: Shane Mahood/USA Network

When aren't Harvey and Louis getting into some type of argument? Now that Jessica won't be around to be their referee, who knows if these two will be able to find common ground. Clearly, Louis did something that upset Harvey. It seems that Harvey is even scolding Louis. This definitely isn't new news because they are rarely ever on the same page. It will surely be interesting to see how they get along as a duo and if they can come together to save their firm.

Also, in the background, it looks like Harvey's executive assistant Gretchen is watching them fight. Like the badass she is, maybe Gretchen will tell Harvey and Louis what's up. She just might be able to fill Jessica's mediator shoes. You know, when Donna isn't taking on the job.

More: 11 reasons a Donna and Harvey relationship on Suits is way overdue

3. Rachel and Louis have a moment

Suits, Rachel and Louis
Image: Shane Mahood/USA Network

It's hard to tell if Rachel and Louis are having a tense moment or if Louis is listening intently to whatever Rachel may or may not be telling him. Rachel is holding a piece of paper in her hand, so maybe they're chatting about that?

Speaking of the paper, it could be an official offer to come work with her father. If so, maybe Louis is telling her not to go. The job offer is definitely happening in the winter premiere too. As TV Line reported in December 2016, Korsh dished that Robert will present Rachel "a job offer in the beginning of [Episode] 611." He added, "Her father is going to say, ‘Listen, it was one thing when Jessica was there. She’s not there, and I’m not sure that firm is going to survive without her. Come work for me.' She’s got to decide: Is she going to stay at Pearson Specter, or is she going to go work for her dad?”

There are pros and cons to the job offer. It would truly be unfortunate if Specter Litt loses Rachel, especially at this exact moment, but like she always does, Rachel will most likely do what is best for her in the long run.

4. Rachel looks a little teary eyed

Suits, Rachel
Image: Shane Mahood/USA Network

This seems like an emotional conversation between Rachel and Gretchen, doesn't it? Whatever is being discussed, Rachel is welling up. Maybe she goes to Gretchen for an unbiased opinion about the job offer from her father. As great as Donna is at offering advice and as much as Mike probably wants to help Rachel make up her mind, sometimes it helps to go to someone who will tell you the honest truth without their feelings involved.

The second half of Season 6 is already shaping up to be an intriguing one. To see how it all plays out, be sure to tune into Suits' winter premiere Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 10/9c on USA.

At least one Walking Dead star 'hated' the first half of Season 7

$

They say all's well that ends well, but they obviously weren't talking about the first half of The Walking Dead Season 7. We can be real about this now, right? It was brutal. And by brutal, I mean BRU-TAL. It's safe to say we never really recovered from losing two of our favorite characters in the premiere.

It was more than just the loss of Glenn and Abe, though — although, admittedly, losing Abe's one-liners alone was a rough blow to the TWD fandom. And, you know, watching Glenn's eyeball pop out was quite literally a rough blow.

More: Shit's about to get real, according to The Walking Dead's new synopsis

But right up until the midseason finale, myriad problems plagued Season 7. It was disjointed. It was hella depressing. It was almost too gory, which says a lot coming from this crowd. Let's just say if it weren't for the show rallying in that last episode of the first half, they may not have been able to pull out of the ratings plunge.

TWD Rick
Image: Giphy

As it turns out, fans weren't the only ones pissed about how the season has played out thus far.

Remember Morgan? You might not considering the staff-wielding warrior-slash-pacifist barely appeared in the first eight episodes. Admittedly, I wasn't a huge fan of this character when he was first introduced, but he has steadily grown on me. Maybe it took not seeing Morgan all season so far to realize I legitimately missed the vibe he brought to the group.

Well, that and I'm a huge fan of the adorable and incredibly talented Lennie James. Have you seen him on The Talking Dead? He's so damn charming, he could sell ice to an Alaskan.

However, his impeccable manners have a breaking point, and that breaking point seems to be a subpar season. When asked by NME what it was like to film only two episodes of the season as the story kept jumping narratives, James didn't hold back.

"Horrible, just horrible — I swear to God, horrible (laughs). But it was the same for everybody. Everyone's had more time off this season than they've ever had, but it's horrible. I hated it, and I complained about it — and I'm not a complainer — every day, like, 'How you doing Lennie?' 'I hate it!' 'You want tea or coffee?' 'I hate it!' It was horrible, because you just didn't see anybody," James explained and we are here for it. You let 'em have it, Lennie!

More: The Walking Dead's new Season 7 teaser photos are weird AF

Plus, as you'll recall, Lennie and Carol were hunkered down at The Kingdom. Not only was this a distinctively different location in TWD world, but it was actually quite different IRL too.

"Because we filmed The Kingdom in a completely different area to where they were filming Alexandria, the Hilltop, or the Saviors, it meant that no one was close to each other," he lamented. "When we started filming the first episode, there was a moment where everybody sort of came together — and then everybody split up."

TWD Morgan
Image: Giphy

Most abhorrently, it interfered with his and Andrew Lincoln's real-life bromance. "I didn't see Andy for six weeks because we weren't filming in the same place... I hated it, it was horrible," James told NME.

And, hey-o, we weren't the only ones to whine about how many newcomers diluted the chemistry of the core characters this season so far.

"... There's whole bunches of people that you meet at the wrap party who you've never met before! You're like, 'Who are you and what are you doing on my show?' There were just loads of people going, 'Hi, I'm such and such and I play...' I don't know you, go away! Where's my mates? It was horrible, I hated it — meeting people at a wrap party and they don't even look like themselves. It's just stupid."

Seriously, AMC, ya heard? Lennie James agrees that keeping Morgan and Carol isolated from the rest of the crew is horrible — where I come from, those are fightin' words.

Happily ('cause this is a weird fandom we inhabit, and we lik'a da carnage), several other cast members seem to confirm that's exactly what the back half of Season 7 will be filled with: fighting.

More: [SPOILER] died on The Walking Dead midseason finale, and war is on the way

Norman Reedus, aka Daryl Dixon, told Entertainment Weekly that he's out for blood. "He wants revenge," Reedus said. "He's ready to fight. When he goes back in that last episode and hands Rick back his stuff, it was like, 'Let's go! Let's go beat this guy up. Let's go take what's ours and fight this monster.' So, you know, he's in kill mode."

TWD Daryl
Image: Giphy

God, I love it when he talks dirty.

As for good ol' "Andy," as James calls him, he also confirms change is coming in the second half of Season 7, saying, "It's probably the opposite of what you just witnessed. Certainly from Rick's point of view. You see a man in action again with some of the members of his closest family."

Hell to the yes, people. Get ready — the shit hits the fan on Monday, Feb. 13.

The Bachelor's Corinne actually had a point about that Taylor 'tude

$

The impossible might happen on The Bachelor: Corinne might become likable. And not in a "we love to hate on her" kind of way, but actually likable.

More: This season's Bachelor contestants take "wrong reasons" to a whole new level

Her path to likability all started tonight when she was upfront with the other girls. Rather than letting them go about talking behind her back, she called it out. Sure, it didn't go so well, and sure she still couldn't help but talk about her multi-million dollar company and her nanny before insisting she isn't privileged, but it's a start.

Then she put on her happy face and pranced around with Nick for a while, who seemed to have found a renewed skepticism with Corinne. Even Corinne noted the lack of intimacy between them, which has me thinking her time on the show is limited at best.

Still, Corinne did the honorable thing again when she went out of her way to talk to Taylor at the group date rather than call her out in front of the other girls.

The Bachelor's Corinne and Taylor
Image: ABC

And Corinne was right.

I know, I'll repeat that.

Corinne was right.

More: Corinne's mom refuses to believe her daughter got naked on The Bachelor

Taylor totally was throwing Corinne unnecessary attitude. It's something I will be referring to from here on out as Taylor 'tude, mostly because it just sounds as hilarious as all of this dramatic situations really are.

So while Taylor was throwing her Taylor 'tude in Corinne's face, trying to school her on some big girl words, Corinne was trying to maintain her composure while venting to the cameras.

But let's just take a step back for a moment. Taylor is worried about Corinne's emotional maturity and readiness to be a wife. Mind you, Corinne is 24, arguably not at the place in her life to be clawing for a husband on national television. But Taylor is 23. She is younger than Corinne. Um, hypocritical much?

Taylor needs to check the 'tude because she really has no place to be talking about emotional maturity. Especially not with that Taylor 'tude she was wearing all over that cocktail party.

More: Bachelor Nation is trying to raise $100,000 to free Corinne's nanny

If it comes down to a two on one between Taylor and Corinne on next week's episode, I have to admit, I'll be rooting for Corinne to get that rose.

The outrage over Meryl Streep getting an Oscar nom over Amy Adams is so real

$

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the 2017 Academy Award nominations were announced. As it usually goes with any award show, people are not happy that one particular actress was snubbed while another one stole her well-deserved spot.

More: So, you're confused after watching Arrival — let us clear that up

We're talking about the fact that Amy Adams wasn't nominated for her lead role in Arrival, but Meryl Streep was nominated for her leading part in Florence Foster Jenkins. How did that happen? Let's also talk about the fact that Arrival was nominated for Best Picture (Florence Foster Jenkins was not). The film wouldn't be in that category without Adams and her fantastic performance, so how the heck did she not get nominated?

Don't get us wrong, Streep is an amazing actress who never fails with any of her performances, including as Florence Foster Jenkins. Plus, this is her 20th Oscar nom and that is a huge milestone, not to mention one that should definitely be celebrated. However, this time around, Adams most definitely deserved a spot in the Best Actress category over Streep.

If you've seen Arrival, then you know where we are coming from. Adams delivered on so many levels in addition to telling an extremely powerful story that was so much more than an alien invasion. We get chills just thinking about it.

We're not alone in our anger, either. There are plenty of similar emotional reactions on Twitter.

More: Sir Ian McKellen weighs in on the 2016 Oscars debate

As you can see above, there are even plenty of Streep fans who think Adams deserved the nomination. Basically, most people seem to be Team Amy in this situation.

To make matters worse, Oscars.com really rubbed salt in the wound by accidentally listing her as a nominee on its mobile site.

Amy Adams Oscar.com snub

Like the class act she is, Adams probably isn't even thinking twice about Streep being nominated over her. Though, that doesn't mean we can't imagine how she might react. So why not have Amy Adams "react" to her own snub with GIFs of the actress?

Here are a few ways Adams could easily be feeling about this snubbing situation.

1. She might be holding in the anger

Amy Adams

Same, Amy. Same.

2. She's probably hiding out

3. She could very well be in denial

4. She's probably biting her tongue

5. She might even be confused

6. She's most likely accepted what's happen

She doesn't seem like one to stew.

7. She's probably walking into every room like this

You know, because Adams is a badass and knows she'll probably get another Oscar nom next time around.

We already know 13 things about Stranger Things Season 2

$

There's no doubt Stranger Things Season 1 was a huge success. It is one of the best series that has ever come to Netflix, so thankfully, there is a second season.

More: Finally there's proof Stranger Things' Steve is actually Jean-Ralphio's dad

From castings to returning characters to episode details, here's everything you need to know before commencing the binge of Season 2.

1. Episode titles

Thanks to this teaser, we now know the titles of each Season 2 episode. Let the speculation begin.

2. Eleven is officially back

Eleven, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

Based on how Season 1 ended, it was unclear if or how Eleven would return to Season 2. Do not fret, because Eleven is returning. Although, how many episodes she'll be featured in and if she'll play a huge part like she did in the first season remains unknown.

Not only is Eleven part of the above photo (which is obviously making a fun play on the Upside Down), but so are Dustin, Lucas, Mike, Will, Jonathan, Nancy, Steve and two new faces. The caption reads, "Back in production. See you next year."

4. More Steve and Will

Steve, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

As reported by TVLine in October, both Steve (Joe Keery) and Will (Noah Schnapp) are now series regulars.

5. So many new characters

The Stranger Things cast is going to be even bigger than it was in the first season. According to TVLine, Sadie Sink (American Odyssey) will play Max, who is said to be a “tough and confident girl whose appearance, behavior and pursuits seem more typical of boys than of girls in this era." Then, there is Power Rangers' Dacre Montgomery, who is set to play Max's "hyper-confident, edgy older step-brother. He steals girlfriends away from their boyfriends, is great at drinking games, and drives a black Camaro. But lurking under his apparent charisma, is a violent and unpredictable nature."

As revealed by Entertainment Weekly, Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, Goonies) and Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen will also be part of Season 2. Reiser will play Dr. Owens, "a high-ranking member within the Department of Energy on a ‘clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the events of last year." Astin will play Bob Newby, "a kindhearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) and now manages the local Hawkins RadioShack." Finally, Berthelsen will play Roman, "an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab…"

6. All about Will

Stranger Things, Will
Image: Giphy

All of Season 1 focused on saving Will and seeing as that was accomplished in the last episode, he will become even more of a focus. In addition to Schnapp being a series regular, Matt and Ross Duffer (aka, the Duffer Brothers and the creators of Stranger Things) told reporters at the Television Critics' Association in July that the sophomore season would look into the "bigger mythology" behind Will's disappearance. Matt said, "It’s open-ended in a way that if people wanted it, and Netflix wanted it, we could explore it and continue the storyline."

7. A time jump

Mike, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

When Season 2 finally premieres, it will pick up in 1984, the Duffer Brothers revealed to EW in July. Even though it's only a one-year time jump, Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) told Entertainment Tonight in November, "You follow these characters a year later, and you're straight back in the world of Hawkins, [Indiana], which we know and love so well. The scope feels bigger this year." Also regarding the time jump, Heaton added, "I don’t think you're gonna notice. Even though it's a year, you're falling straight back into where we left off, in a sense."

8. We'll see more than just Hawkins

Jonathan, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

The Duffer Brothers also told EW that Season 2 will travel outside of Hawkins. "We will venture a little bit outside of Hawkins," Matt said. "I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins."

9. There are nine episodes

Dustin, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

It's only one more episode than Season 1, but Season 2 will include nine episodes. Matt told EW, "We’re letting the story dictate it. I think if it gets any longer, it gets unwieldy for us. We want to make sure it’s manageable and we want to be able to tell a movie-like story where it’s never treading water. We want it to have the same feel and pacing as Season 1. I think if we extend it too much, it will have a very different feel."

10. Even more from the Upside Down

Joyce, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

If you thought the Upside Down storyline was finished, you're wrong. There is so much more to learn, Matt dished to EW. "We kinda just peeled back the curtain and revealed a tiny bit of the Upside Down. So we definitely want to explore a little bit more. There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of Season 1."

11. Joyce is getting a love interest

Stranger Things, Joyce
Image: Giphy

During a Jan. 21 Fan2Sea Comic-Con cruise (via Hollywood Life) David Harbour (he plays Hopper), dished, "We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend — much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police." So does this also mean Hopper and Joyce may soon have a romance?

12. "Justice for Barb"

David Harbour, Stranger Things
Image: Giphy

If you consider yourself a huge fan of Barb, Harbour also teased at the panel that she will be part of the storyline, but not physically. "The question and the feelings that Nancy has that no one ever cares about her friend Barb are very much present in the beginning of the season," he revealed.

13. There is some fallout

Stranger Things, Eleven
Image: Giphy

According to Harbour, there is also some major fallout between certain people, which is to be expected. "It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year — like Will has come back — there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened." He added, "So there’s a lot of fallout with who knows what."

These Black Mirror episodes are too real under a Trump presidency

$
0
0

The next four years will be long, and even the most seasoned political experts seem pretty confounded about what they might bring. Luckily, we can let our imaginations rest for a moment because we have the Netflix series Black Mirror to provide several different dystopian visions of the future to choose from.

More: 8 reasons Netflix's Black Mirror is a must-watch

So, which of the Black Mirror episodes might our next four years resemble? Let's see.

Spoiler alert: If you haven't yet watched Black Mirror, be aware this article may give away some of the twists and turns in the episodes discussed. You've been warned!

"White Bear"

First of all, this episode was goddamn terrifying. Each of the 48 minutes felt like it had literally been pulled from one of my worst nightmares.

Unfortunately, a future in which criminals are punished by being imprisoned in a "justice park" to entertain audiences really doesn't seem too far off for a reality TV host-turned-president who promises to be tough on crime. I mean, really, why not combine them both? Think of the ratings!

The only problem Trump would have with this is that Netflix thought of it first.

More: The Apprentice turned into a presidential campaign while no one was watching

"The Waldo Moment"

After seeing a failed businessman and former reality TV star run for president and win, is it such a stretch to imagine we'd see a foul-mouthed cartoon bear next? Just remember, we laughed at Trump too.

I'm legitimately terrified to see who pops up in the 2020 campaign. Let's just cross our fingers and hope for Michelle, yes?

More: Michelle Obama's face at the inauguration is basically all of us watching from home

"15 Million Merits"

The only issue with this episode is that the idea of humans being harnessed to produce electricity seems a little too green for this administration. Otherwise, the latent misogyny, the focus on online spending and reducing human lives to mere merits seem about right.

Also, this episode made me so very, very depressed.

Abi's song does do a little to ease the heartbreak, but you'll need a shower after this one for sure. A shower and a solemn vow to never let your life dwindle to a never-ending loop of work and TV shows.

"Nosedive"

Each year, social media plays an ever-larger role in our lives, our health and even our politics. It isn't much of a stretch to think that once our online personas merge with our real selves, likes will mean a whole lot more to us than a pleasant ego boost.

In a rare occurrence for Black Mirror, the episode ends on a good note. Sort of.

I mean, yes Lacie finds herself in jail, dirty and friendless after becoming a social pariah. But she's also freer than she's ever been. She's found emancipation in the most unlikely of places. She finds her voice with a powerful shout of "Fuuuuuuck youuuu!"

"The National Anthem"

People dislike Donald Trump to the extent that imagining cyber terrorists manipulating him with the threat of extreme violence into sodomizing a pig doesn't really sound too far-fetched. Of course, what does sound far-fetched is a Trump who would forsake himself for the sake of the people. He really seems to think that highly of himself.

"Men Against Fire"

They say war makes great presidents, which means Trump probably won't have any problem putting our military spending to good use in the next four years. Add that to your list of things to look forward to during his presidency. But it could get worse if this Black Mirror episode proves to have any hint of truth. You see, there's a lot of psychology behind warfare, and once you become a soldier, all bets are off about how the government can use you as a weapon. And if you are a weapon, then of course the United States government wants you to be as accurate as possible. Can't have those pesky emotions and morals getting in the way, now can we?

"Hated in the Nation"

There's a reason that the episode titled "Hated in the Nation" is about a journalist. Trump has made it his mission to alienate the media, which means maybe I should think about a new profession. More than focusing on journalism as a profession, however, "Hated in the Nation" looks at online shaming and its potential future consequences.

Even if none of these dystopian futures become our reality, I think that yell-swearing one is something that many of us will be doing a lot of during the next four years.

Can you think of other Black Mirror episodes that could be predicting the future? Let us know in the comments below.

Suits' Mike just pulled a Dead Poets Society, & we totally need more

Suits is back with the rest of Season 6 and Jessica Pearson is officially gone. It's definitely a different vibe without Gina Torres, but as sad as we were to see her go, we've found something else to focus all our energy on.

More: Suits Season 6 photos tease an unpredictable time for Specter Litt

Mike Ross tried out teaching in Wednesday's premiere. You heard us; Mike just had his very own John Keating (you know, from Dead Poets Society) moment.

After realizing how hard it will be for him to get any type of job, especially one involving law, now that he is a convicted felon, Mike sought out advice from his childhood priest, Father Sam Walker (Scott Michael Campbell).

Walker decided to offer Mike a job as a teacher at the very same Catholic school Mike attended when he was young. He was hesitant at first, but Walker told Mike to try it out for at least two weeks until the former teacher returned from vacation.

It didn't turn out to be that easy. Actually, practicing law seemed to be a breeze compared to Mike's teaching abilities. The classroom of teen boys was not welcoming and even found a mug shot of Mike to tease him with. Yeah, Mike had quite the rough first day.

But, he channeled his inner Robin Williams, went back and tried his best to transform his students' lives. Eventually, he got through to them by revealing that their former teacher actually wasn't gone for two weeks on vacation, but was leaving indefinitely due to cancer. The latter also came as a shock to Mike after Father Walker finally told him the truth. He was hoping maybe Mike would end up loving teaching and stick around.

After finding his teaching groove, things went downhill for Mr. Ross. Unfortunately, one of the students informed their parents that Mike has a prison record, so of course they complained to Father Walker. Now Mike is out of a job — again.

More: Jessica's Suits Season 6 departure was perfect

Dead Poets Society

Seriously? Mike is already fired? He didn't even get his "Carpe Diem" moment. We need more of Mike as Mr. Ross. Here's hoping there is some way that Father Walker can convince the parents that Mike is actually good for their students.

It's a nice change of pace for Mike. After all, he also told Harvey during the episode that he is done with Harvey and Specter Litt. At least for now, Mike never wants to come back to the firm where he practiced law illegally. He appears to be ready to move on and find a new path since serving prison time.

Wouldn't the perfect way be as teacher? Mike really wants to spend his time now by helping others, so why not as Mr. Ross? He could truly make a difference and become the next John Keating we all know and love.

Keep those fingers crossed that Mike somehow finds his way back to teaching. Though, seeing as this is a series about lawyers, there's probably a better chance Mike ends up getting back into law in some way, shape or form. Until that happens, maybe Suits can give us a few more episodes of Mike as a teacher?

Suits airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA.

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee had the perfect tribute to Mary Tyler Moore

Today was a sad day for feminists everywhere. Still reeling from President Trump's latest anti-choice measures, feminists were saddened to hear of Mary Tyler Moore's passing. It wasn't entirely unexpected, given the health issues Moore has battled these last several years, but that didn't make the news any less devastating.

More: Samantha Bee reminds us that President Obama wasn't perfect

A true icon, Moore paved the path for legions of career-minded women with her relatable character, Mary Richards. Her character was the determined single woman other women hoped to be, and her newsroom antics encouraged aspiring members of the workforce that they "might just make it after all."

Samantha Bee and her cohorts were clearly saddened by Moore's death, so they decided to include a tribute to the iconic actress in an episode of Full Frontal already packed with feminist messages. The tribute followed an a cappella number featuring several talented women wearing the memorable pink hats from last week's Women's March on Washington.

More: New Samantha Bee theory: Donald Trump can't read — and it totally makes sense

At the very end of the episode, the singers shared a short, but sweet tribute to their favorite actress. Standing in a circle, they removed their bright pink hats and threw them in the air, much as Moore so famously did during her show's memorable opener.

Although she played a fictional associate producer rather than appearing on the news herself, Moore arguably paved the path for such influential figures as Samantha Bee. She inspired many women who previously assumed that there just wasn't a place for them in the newsroom. Yes, it's worth noting that she eventually became an avowed conservative and skeptical of the feminist movement, but her previous encouragement of women in the workforce cannot be forgotten.

Full Frontal's brief tribute to Mary Tyler Moore reminded us how far we've come since Moore first made a name for herself as Laura Petrie. The episode as a whole, however, was a reminder of how much further we have to go. But with inspiring women such as Bee leading the charge — and paying homage to those who came before — the future is bright for women in America.

Will Bonnie Have to Die to Bring Elena Back for TVD's Final Episode?

This is not a test — Nina Dobrev is returning to TVD one last time before the series officially closes its diary.

More: Nina Dobrev announces Vampire Diaries exit with 23 photos and sweet message

Dobrev announced her return on Instagram Thursday alongside a photo of the final script. "I know it's Thursday, but this is not a TBT. #BackOnSet #TVDForever."

I know it's Thursday, but this is not a TBT. #BackOnSet #TVDForever

A photo posted by Nina Dobrev (@ninadobrev) on

Ever since closing her chapter as Elena Gilbert, it was unclear whether or not Dobrev would ever reprise her beloved role. Now we finally have answer. No details have been revealed about exactly how she'll return, though executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson did release statements (via Entertainment Weekly) expressing their excitement over the news.

Plec said, "I’m thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended — with Nina back to help us say goodbye."

Williamson added, "I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!”

We have no doubts that it will certainly be "epic," because at this point in time there seems to be no way for Elena to come back in vampire form without her best friend Bonnie (Kat Graham) dying. Remember, Kai placed Elena in magic-induced coma and linked her to Bonnie. So when Bonnie dies, Elena awakes.

However Dobrev is incorporated into the series finale, it will probably be memorable. So with that, let's take the time to theorize about all the ways we can think of (right now, at least) that Elena will be part of the last TVD episode ever.

More: The Vampire Diaries spoiler: Paul Wesley reveals the future for Steroline

1. Bonnie dies

Bonnie and Elena
Image: Giphy

Again, at this time, Bonnie's death seems like the only solution. As for when Bonnie dies is another question.

2. A future Elena

Elena Gilbert
Image: Giphy

What if Bonnie grows old and ends up dying with a human Enzo (he could take the cure) and then we see Dobrev return as Elena in the very far-off future? There's a chance TVD could do a major time-jump to show Elena and Damon living happily ever after 60 or so years from now. And be sure to take note that the final episode is titled, "I Was Feeling Epic." Maybe Elena is telling her story to someone or writing in her diary about her "epic" journey.

3. It's not Elena, it's Katherine

Katherine Pierce
Image: Giphy

Neither Dobrev, Plec, or Williamson said Dobrev is coming back as Elena. What if she is returning as Katherine or another doppelgänger? Katherine seems likely, especially since the final season is dealing directly with hell. If you recall, last we saw Katherine Pierce, she was seemingly being dragged to hell. Hmm... it's possible. Though, we highly doubt Plec and Williamson would bring back Dobrev and not show her as Elena in the series finale. That would be so cruel.

4. They beat Kai at his own game

TVD, Kai
Image: Giphy

Maybe they end up figuring out a way to break Kai's magic, awake Elena and keep Bonnie alive all at the same time. They always seem to find a way around spells, so don't lose hope just yet.

More: Vampire Diaries: What I really thought of Nina Dobrev's final goodbye

5. Time travel

Stefan and Elena
Image: Giphy

Now, TVD isn't The Flash by any means, but what if time travel somehow becomes a possibility? If so, then maybe they could all travel back to the past and stop Kai before he caused an even bigger mess of their lives.

6. It's only a dream and/or vision

Damon Salvatore
Image: Giphy

Here's hoping Dobrev doesn't only appear as Elena in dream or vision. That would be a total bummer, wouldn't it? Also, it would be completely unfair. Fans deserve better than that.

7. Memories last forever

Elena Gilbert
Image: Giphy

What would be worse than a dream and/or vision would be seeing Elena in a memory. Seeing as TVD has already shown past memories of Elena this season, we highly doubt this is even an option.

However Dobrev returns, it's exciting to know that TVD will end with her by its side and exactly as it should.

You can catch Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries series finale when it airs Friday, March 10 at 8/7c on The CW.

Can Grey's Anatomy Survive Now That [SPOILER] is Gone?

$
0
0

We're all fans of Grey's Anatomy here, right? Therefore we make no pretenses about what kind of show we've gotten ourselves hooked on. 'Tis not the cheery, hopeful kind of show where everyone gets a happy ending. Like Meredith, it's dark and twisty. So it was only a matter of time before Shonda Rhimes axed another one of our favorite characters.

More: How well do you know Grey's Anatomy? Test your knowledge with this quiz

Think back to the Season 13 mid-season winter finale, which left the fate of two beloved Grey Sloan Memorial doctors hanging in the balance: both Amelia and Alex.

Amelia just of disappeared. She became the proverbial runaway bride by bailing and leaving only a sad-sack note for Owen. Where did she go? Is she coming back? Why must Rhimes take people away from us? Are we being punished?

As for Alex, well, he Alex-ed himself right into some pretty serious hot water after beating DeLuca to a pulp. In his defense (if there is such a thing in this case?), he walked in on what thought was DeLuca sexually assaulting Jo.

Long story short, he's been dealing with the legalities and court stuff for awhile now. There's definitely been talk of Alex going to jail — and of Justin Chambers moving on after a long and successful run on the medi-drama series. Naturally, we would all much prefer to ignore such pesky rumors, but it became increasingly difficult to be optimistic that Alex would avoid jail time.

And damn it, if we're still being real, we're still not over Alex's whole "let's have waffles" speech. Someone somewhere pour a shot of maple syrup out for our boy, will you?

This brings us to our current (read: perpetual) state of anxiously waiting and wondering whose head was on Rhimes' chopping block this time. It looks like we got our answer tonight, too.

During a super-tense episode — prepare the epsom salts, because you're going to need a nice, long soak in a hot tub after this one — Bailey, Arizona and Jo travel to a high-security women's prison. Of course we don't know that at first; we only know that Bailey is being a big chicken about wherever they're headed.

When they arrive, we find out they are there to perform a procedure on a pregnant inmate. A kicking, punching, biting, completely volatile and often irrational inmate, no less. This thrills no one, the least of all Bailey. However, Jo and Arizona convince her that this girl needs and deserves their help.

Following some serious, albeit somewhat predictable complications, they have to wind up delivering the baby pre-term to save its life. Since the mother is still handcuffed to the bed, this is both brutal to watch and clearly inhumane.

More: A collection of the best Grey's Anatomy memes out there

When all is said and done, the girl and the baby both end up OK. But the whole ordeal raises important questions about women's rights while incarcerated. You know how Shonda Rhimes does — she likes a side of social commentary with her medical emergencies.

But what happened after the doctors left the hospital raises another very important question.

At first, as Bailey, Arizona and Jo drive back toward Grey Sloan, you think, "Hmm, how interesting that this entire episode was about just these three women and a medical case wholly unrelated to any of the regular roster of characters."

Except, it wasn't unrelated. In a gutting moment — the one we've all been dreading — Bailey reveals that Alex took a plea deal with the D.A. He is officially going to jail, y'all. You could practically hear the fandom's collective heart break.

Raise your hand if you feel like there should be a support group for those of us who feel personally victimized by Rhimes? *raises hand*

So, the question at hand is: Can Grey's go on without Alex Karev? One of the few remaining OG characters and one of the last OG guys on the show, Alex isn't just Meredith's person now... he's all of our person. We already lost McDreamy; can we say goodbye to Alex, too?

While I certainly fall into the camp of people grieving over the very thought of not seeing Alex on our screens each week, with cautious optimism I say, "Yes."

Grey's will go on. Just like it did after McDreamy died. And the strength of the show that will continue to shine is the women. At this point, the series is truly about women empowering each other and being each other's soulmates. They're the heroes of their own stories.

More: Did Grey's Anatomy's Alex Karev just confirm he's leaving the show?

If you need proof, simply look to this week's episode. We went an entire hour with nary a man in sight. Sure, the mention of Alex was kind of our undoing but, let's be real: Bailey, Arizona and Jo easily carried the hour.

I, for one, am looking forward to how the women will rise to the challenge of navigating Grey Sloan without the inimitable Alex Karev.

What do you think? Will you keep watching now that Alex appears to be gone?

Supernatural’s Mary Better Avoid the British Men of Letters at All Costs

$

Ever since Lady Toni Bevell first appeared at the end of Supernatural Season 11, fans knew the British Men of Letters would be up to no good. They've continued to prove just that throughout Season 12, but especially during Thursday's winter premiere.

More: Sam & Dean are so screwed in these 'Supernatural' S12 winter premiere photos

First, allow us to reassure viewers that Sam and Dean are now safe and sound. They managed to escape the grasp of the Secret Service after being wrongfully accused of an assassination attempt on the president of the United States.

How the heck did they do it? Oh you know, by making a deal with Billie the reaper. While locked up, both Sam and Dean realized they would end up going crazy if they didn't find a way out. Actually, Dean even told Mary and Cas that being locked in a cell with no windows and zero communication (yes, even with Sam) was worse than being in hell. Well, that would be pretty bad, wouldn't it?

So Dean called out to Billie and the Winchesters made a deal with her. They realized the only way they would ever get out of that place would be by not breathing. Billie would allow them to die and then come back one more time. However, in exchange for resurrecting them (which she is strongly against), at midnight Billie would end up taking one of the Winchesters.

Eventually, Billie showed up, but before Sam or Dean could offer one of themselves up, Mary came forward. She is a Winchester, which Billie was going to accept with welcome arms. As Mary held a gun to her head and said "I love you" to her boys, Castiel jabbed an angel blade right through Billie.

More: Supernatural's [SPOILER] having a baby isn't something to celebrate

This deal Sam and Dean made was a blood pact and Billie said if it was broken it would have "consequences on a cosmic scale." Who knows if Cas killing her truly breaks the deal, but at least all three Winchesters are still alive and kicking. Like fans, Cas can't live without any of them. As he said in a heartfelt and emotional speech, "This sad doomed little world, it needs you. It needs every last Winchester it can get." Damn straight.

So all is good, right? Unfortunately, not, because Mary was shown at the episode's end contemplating working with Mick from the British Men of Letters.

Granted, Mick and Mr. Ketch helped Mary and Cas find Sam and Dean, but they take hunting to a whole new level. Let's just say that after Sam and Dean escaped the government agents and soldiers, Mr. Ketch went back and murdered them all. Obviously, that keeps things nice and tidy.

Sam and Dean would never do that, so to hear that Mary is at least willing to listen to Mick's proposal of why the British Men of Letters are worthy hunters gives us such a bad feeling. She needs to avoid them at all costs. She doesn't know of Mr. Ketch's bloody ways, but Mary better realize fast that they are not good people.

Here's hoping this is just Mary's way of infiltrating the London chapter of the Men of Letters to get more information and to keep tabs on them. Now that's the Mary Winchester we know and love. If not, keep those fingers crossed that Mary does not fall for Mick's persuasive speech.

Riverdale Gave the Archie Characters One Hell of a Makeover

$

After much hype, but not so many big expectations, the Archie comics reimagining Riverdale has arrived at The CW. And I have to admit, I kinda loved it.

The blend of dark comedy and comic bookey lines reimagined was like watching Heathers meets Vampire Diaries, minus the vampires with a Twitter upgrade.

More: January is full of TV premieres — 21 to be exact

Here's how the show has reimagined your favorite comic book characters of old into something a new generation is sure to appreciate.

Comic book Archie

Archie Comics
Image: Archie Comics

Traditionally, Archie has a few things on the brain: girls, milkshakes and more girls. He was known as "America's Typical Teenager" back when the comics were first published in 1941. Archie did have a love triangle between Betty and Veronica, and he notoriously left both girls hanging, but that didn't stop audiences from falling in love with his hero-like qualities and his ever-thoughtful personality.

Riverdale Archie

Riverdale's Archie
Image: The CW

After spending the summer working for his dad's construction company, Archie is hot, but his abs also come with some new dirty, dark secrets he's hiding. Secrets like, oh, I don't know... he slept with his teacher. And while they were sleeping together, they heard a gunshot they never reported. Somehow in the wake of that, the fact that this Archie likes writing songs doesn't really seem like a secret anyone should care about. No wonder his dad brushed it off so quickly.

Comic book Betty

Archie Comic's Betty
Image: Archie Comics

Betty is the traditional Riverdale queen bee. She is smart, likable and has an intelligence that leaves her with a desire to become a writer. She is referred to as "Riverdale's Sweetheart," and everyone can see her affection for Archie.

Riverdale Betty

Riverdale's Betty
Image: The CW

While the Betty of Riverdale seems to be well liked among her classmates, her reserved attitude and troubled family life keep her from shining to her full potential. Luckily, new student Veronica has arrived to push her in the right direction. But even with Veronica's encouragement, Betty just couldn't get Archie's attention in the premiere. Also, apparently Archie isn't the only one who transformed over the summer. The girls allude to Betty's weight loss a few times throughout the show.

Comic book Veronica

Archie Comic's Veronica

Image: Archie Comics

Veronica is the free-spirited fashionista of the comics. Despite Veronica's expensive taste, she has a thing for slightly-awkward-but-adorable Archie. She is the heiress to her family fortune and is already working on spending it.

More: Even if you gave up on Vampire Diaries, you should still watch the final season

Riverdale Veronica

Riverdale's Veronica
Image: The CW

The Veronica of Riverdale is less focused on material things, thank goodness. Like everyone seems to in Riverdale, her family has a dark past stemming from her father's involvement in fraud, which is why she and her mother moved from New York. The once popular queen bee, Veronica's family troubles have caused her to reevaluate her attitude and life, and she is quickly taken with Betty. In the pilot alone, their friendship has the power to cause more 'ships than anything having to do with Archie.

Comic book Jughead

Archie Comic's Jughead

Image: Archie Comics

Comic book Jughead is Archie's best friend, known for his headwear and his appetite. Though Jughead is surprisingly intellectual, his easygoing nature hides his true brainpower. Not to mention, when he takes off his hat, bad things have a tendency to happen.

Riverdale Jughead

Riverdale's Jughead
Image: The CW

The Jughead of Riverdale seems like a bit of a loner. Though he and Archie apparently used to be friends, they now seem distanced and removed from one another's lives. Jughead is the show's narrator, which makes sense because he's the budding novelist of the series. Something tells me we'll be seeing a lot more of him in coming episodes.

Comic book Josie

Archie Comics' Josie
Image: Archie Comics

Josie is known in the comics as being the female version of Archie, but her character really took on a life of her own throughout the series, eventually even getting her own live-action movie. Josie is a rocker girl, who can be a little space-heady but always means well.

More: Supernatural’s Dean making a deal with Billie is so going to end badly

Riverdale Josie

Riverdale's Josie
Image: The CW

The Josie of Riverdale is bringing the spunk and attitude. She clearly wants nothing to do with Archie and just wants to focus on her tunes. Her voice is great for the classics, but I have a feeling she'll be rocking to her own beats throughout the season as well.

Paging President Trump: Scandal Has a Message for You

Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes has made it clear she is not a Donald Trump fan. Rhimes herself was an avid Hillary Clinton supporter, so Season 6 of the show was obviously going to be politically motivated in a very personal way for Rhimes.

More: 12 ways the Scandal presidential candidates are better than the real ones

The writing in the premiere did not disappoint, and its weight was most felt through a promise, a question, posed by Fitz. It's a promise I would love to hear Trump make because I have such heavy doubts about his ability to uphold the integrity of the office, just as Fitz questions Cyrus' abilities in the Scandal premiere.

"I need you to promise me something," Fitz says in a message that is clearly bigger than that scene, that moment, those actors. "I need you to make me a promise right here, right now. That you will uphold the legacy of Francisco Vargas. That you will be honorable, forthright, always put the country above all else. That you will be better than you are, than I was.

"I am handing you the most beautiful thing in the world. I am handing you America. Take care of it."

More: Scandalcharacters who could take over Fitz's presidency

This oath is currently the battle cry of Americans. Take care of us, President Trump. Have honor, President Trump. Put the country before yourself, President Trump.

No matter what he swore on that Bible on Inauguration Day, it seems like these are promises Trump has yet to make to himself and to the country.

Unfortunately, the odds that he will even pay attention to the message of Scandal's Season 6 are slim, except likely to say that he thinks Rhimes is overrated, as he said of Meryl Streep. That's his strategy whenever he is challenged: Fling insults and act like nothing touches him.

More: I hate that Scandal's Olivia and Jake are bumping uglies again

But he doesn't need to listen for the message of Scandal for it to have impact. I am listening. The country is listening, and eventually, the tendrils of those cries for justice and honor will reach President Trump. If he has any sense, he will listen.

Did you think Cyrus is Scandal's Donald Trump?

Think Twice About Hating On Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi — Richard Blais Has Her Back

$

For celebrity chef Richard Blais, 2017 is off to an amazing start. Already known as a Top Chef-All Stars winner and now judge, Blais is a successful author, restaurateur and now... actor and writer? We caught up with the Trail Blais-er at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, to hear about his latest recipe for success.

Richard Blais, Top Chef
Image: Bravo!

Despite this year's Sundance Film Festival's snowstorms and freezing temperatures, filmmakers, movie stars and even chefs have donned their snow gear and shown up to have fun.

We were lucky enough to attend a cooking demonstration performed by Top Chef winner Richard Blais at the Chase Sapphire on Main, where the menu was a hearty winter meal: seared elk accented with reindeer moss and pine nut foam. It may sound quite exotic, but the hungry crowd agreed it was quite a robust offering, perfect for the snowy weather.

In between live cooking shows and catering cast parties for the many exciting films premiering at the festival, Blais managed to find a few minutes to sit down with us and share what Top Chef is really like behind the scenes.

What it's like as a Top Chef judge

The current season of Top Chef is rookies vs. veterans, and to us, it seems the veterans are owning the competition. We asked Blais if he thought the producers wanted to see the newbies fail to provide maximum conflict on the show. His answer surprised us: "I don't think they set anyone up to fail. I don't think anyone thought the veterans would run away with it."

Blais contends that the entire show is made with the utmost integrity, particularly when it comes down to judging the chefs' food. "The judges take the decision process very seriously. I've seen it take six hours. There is a legend of a nine-hour deliberation — I just think it's a testament to the show," he said. "It's four people with different opinions, and we will hash it out for hours."

More: Top Chef's Jamie Lynch may be out, but he's definitely not done fighting

But, like any reality TV show, personalities come into play, Blais told us. "For me, as someone who is now on the judging panel for a few seasons, initially, I had to overcome the fact that it's Tom Colicchio and Padma Lakshmi's show. They're the seniors on the court, so to speak. But if you don't speak your mind, you won't be there for another episode."

Inside the Top Chef house

As a judge, Blais said he isn't privy to the day-to-day frictions between competing chefs. "We're only in front of the contestants when you see us in front of the contestants," he told us. "We don't watch any of the prep. We have no idea what's going on back at the cast house."

Though he thinks it's good that the judges don't see behind the scenes because it prevents influencing their decisions about the food, Blais thinks the manipulations inside the cast house are where the real drama happens.

More: Top Chef's Silvia Barban & Sylva Senat apparently had beef on the show

Richard Blais, Top Chef
Image: Bravo

"As a fan of Top Chef, I would love to see more of the cast house. I guess it's more typical reality TV, but I find the social challenges fascinating, having competed on it," Blais said. "I remember my good friend Fabio Viviani made a meatball one time back at the cast house. It was just me and Fabio eating a meatball, so probably not a big dynamic moment for the television show, but a real genuine moment where we became friends. Besides the fights and the drunkenness that happens at the cast house, there are some really great moments that the show doesn't have time for."

More: Who should win Top Chef? Amanda Baumgarten has three female chefs in mind

If Blais had to pick his favorite Top Chef of all time, it would be Dale Talde: "We're just sort of brothers. I really enjoyed him, but the list could really go to 12, 15 people. What's great about the show is how far a contestant can go, even if they don't win. Dale's one of those stories."

Don't underestimate Lakshmi

Blais says he gets frustrated when people underestimate Lakshmi, the show's hostess.

"There's a fan base out there that thinks Padma is just a pretty face because she's a model. 'What does she know about food?' I get pretty sensitive about that because she's so intelligent and knows so much about food, but she just happens to be a model who's beautiful. She's the only person who eats all of the contestants' food every single challenge because she's there in the Quickfire, she's there in the elimination challenges as well."

Blais also feels that sometimes the other host, Colicchio, can get a bad rap. "He gets this knock for being so hard and serious, a curmudgeon even. But having sat next to him, he's a lot more joyful. Maybe that's because I'm no longer a competitor. He's a fun guy, a musician. He'll play guitar back stage. So he's an artist, like most of us. I'm now into writing."

Blais, the writer and actor

Yes, you read that correctly. Blais has aspirations of being a writer and even has some film and TV treatments floating around Hollywood.

"I'm collecting data on all these different chef personalities. The thing I'm working on now is, here are these four different chef personalities that exist in this world. One is a teacher, one is a mean chef, one is an absolute maniac, etc. I'm just really digging into that world because everyone eats. The stories of chefs and people who work in the hospitality industry work because we can all sort of relate."

Why Him?
Image: Fox

And if you missed Blais's acting debut in the James Franco comedy Why Him? you're missing out on an absolutely hilarious movie. Blais plays a personal chef with his own unique take on the "farm to table" movement. Called the "lawn to table" movement in the film, Blais raises livestock like chickens and cows in Franco's yard until it's time for them to become dinner, providing the freshest meat possible.

Though 2017 marked Blais's first Sundance Film Festival, he vows it will not be his last. "Being on a movie set really inspired me and got me engaged in the acting and writing process. I'm committed to getting back to Sundance," he said.

Top Chef's Emily Hahn Reflects Back on Her 'Low Point' With John Tesar

Two words: Michael Voltaggio.

I was honestly having trouble recalling what went down this last episode of Top Chef because all I remember is Voltaggio in that black jacket, Voltaggio whipping out a blindfold from his back pocket, Voltaggio taking a shot of tequila and then Voltaggio sitting at the judges' table talking so passionately about food.

I wasn't alone.

Anyway, I do remember cheftestant Emily Hahn getting eliminated because she failed to give a unique take on her grandfather's cake for the $500-per-ticket fundraiser they catered. Here are her thoughts on getting kicked off, what it was like being on the show and more.

SheKnows: Were you surprised by your elimination?

Emily Hahn: I felt confident about my dish until I unwrapped it when we began our hour of prep time on Kiawah. I swallowed all of the negative thoughts going through my mind and did what any chef would do. I made the best of the situation and dish and kept my cool. I was not surprised when I was sent home. Overcoming a bad dish is tough in this competition.

SK: What was it like working with all the judges on the show? Who's the most intimidating?

EH: Tom [Colicchio] by far was the most harsh and intimidating judge. I say harsh, but in reality, he was the most honest and truthful. I was competing with very talented people, and I could not seem to hold on to my confidence and make the food that I make daily with my heart and not my head. I didn’t cook to my best ability, and he knew it and was not afraid to be honest with me.

SK: Which contestant do you think deserves to win? Or who are you rooting for?

EH: Sheldon [Simeon]’s food is like eating a story about who he is, where he came from, how much love is in his heart and his family. He has so much soul, I think he deserves the win. Brooke [Williamson] is fierce, she is a woman, chef and a person that I admire. She knows what she wants and she is so very talented.

SK: Who did you consider your biggest competition?

EH: I think everyone in the competition gave me some kind of run for my money. Of course, putting veteran cheftestants and new chefs on the show together, I would say my biggest completion was the veteran chefs. They know the game, the cameras, the grueling schedule. For us, it was sort of like running an ultra-run without knowing the route. For them, it was about knowing and preparation.

SK: Was there anyone on the show you really clashed with? Who was it and why?

EH: My moment with John Tesar in the pirate challenge was a low point for me. We did not work well as a team, and I felt the need to "play the game" and not accept that I made a crappy dish. He is a wise chef, he certainly has his flaws, but the past is the past.

SK: What's one thing that happened behind the scenes that viewers didn't get to see on the show?

EH: I wish there were some Top Chef bloopers of behind-the-scenes moments. After Restaurant Wars, I felt like I came into my own as a person with the remaining chefs and was able to let my guard down and enjoy them as people. We may or may not have had some bonding moments late night by the ocean — where is the "oops," shocked-face emoji when I need it?

SK: Who do you think deserved to go home on last night’s episode?

EH: I deserved to go home on this episode. I faltered with the connection from my heart to the dish; it showed.

SK: What was the best experience you had on the show?

EH: I have 15 new friends for life, 15 chefs who are now my peers and lifelong friends to cook with, laugh with and look back on this experience with. That is something not many people get the chance to say they have. Plus, not too shabby for my family and close friends to say they know someone close to them that was on Bravo TV!

SK: What was the biggest challenge for you on the show?

EH: The biggest challenge for me on the show was the timing and the cameras. I have never been a competitive person. I wanted to challenge myself and go as far as I could. I struggle with my nerves all the time. I usually overcome them and execute well, but I found it difficult in front of the cameras and against the clock.

SK: Who's your favorite Top Chef contestant of all time and why?

EH: Sheldon is by far my favorite Top Chef contestant out of anyone — his smile, his heart, his soul. I keep repeating myself, but he just has some calming and positive energy around him at all times. All of the veterans were a trip to get to know in real life.

Canada Loans The Voice Celine Dion and We Are Hashtag Blessed

It's no secret that the US of A is going through a bit of a moment right now. Things are rough, and as a Canadian, I'd like you to know that we are here for you. We're your closest neighbors, your BFFs, and goddamn it, we are here to help!

To prove it, we will soon be loaning you our finest national treasure.

No, not our hottie PM or his kickass French wife. We're not going to send truckfuls of poutine or let you win the Stanley Cup.

It's better than that. SO MUCH BETTER: We are letting you have Celine Dion

Celine Dion
Image: Giphy

Not forever! You can't have her forever. But we're going to lend her to you for a little while to help you get through this challenging time.

"Mon dieu!" you say. "Why are we being blessed with this beautiful chanteuse, fluent in French and English and the absolute definition of extra?"

Well, you have The Voice to thank for this tiny miracle.

Somehow, The Voice convinced the one and only Celine Claudette Marie Dion to appear on the show next season as Gwen Stefani's advisor.

Celine Dion shocked
Image: Giphy

First of all, let's just agree that Gwen Stefani's great, but she is luckyyyy to have Celine Dion. And as an advisor, no less! We should all be so lucky as to have Celine Dion advising us. Can you imagine?

She'd say things inspired by the lyrics of her award-winning songs, like, "The whispers in the morning of lovers sleeping tight are rolling by like thunder now. As I look in your eyes, I hold on to your body and feel each move you make. Your voice is warm and tender, a love that I could not forsake."

And you will have no fucking clue what she's talking about because all you asked her was what you should order at Chipotle, but it won't matter because you'll be crying and she'll be crying and then she'll envelop you in her weirdly toned arms and everything will be OK.

This news has kept me smiling all morning and I don't even watch The Voice. Singing shows make me uncomfortable because I can't tell who's good and who's terrible, and the judges' opinions are never the same as my own, and it reminds me that I'm incredibly tone deaf and never sing in public unless incredibly inebriated.

BUT!

Celine Dion? Celine mutha-fucking Dion? My god, how can I not watch The Voice if she is going to be emoting all over the place?

Celine Dion excited
Image: Giphy

This is going to be unreal. You see, Celine Dion, youngest of 14 children, feels things more than other people. Ten... nay... a hundred times more.

Celine Dion emotions
Image: Giphy

She has to focus to keep emotion out of her voice when she sings. Because she has too much of it. And if she feels the full force of her emotions, she will cry. And she can't cry! Because if she cried during her songs, she wouldn't be able to sing in the way we've all come to expect from her, the second-highest earning musician of all time.

But her emotion does still come through, because of course it does.

Celine Dion fierce
Image: Giphy

What is Dion appearing on The Voice even going to look like?

What if someone is shit? Is Celine Mutha-Fucking Dion capable of advising Gwen that someone is shit?

What will that do to her? I'm concerned. Concerned for what rejecting people might do to Dion's emotions.

Conversely, imagine when someone wins. Or gets through. Or gets turned around on. (Again, I have never watched The Voice and have no idea what happens on this show.)

I mean, they'll be happy, sure, but it will be fucking nothing compared to how happy Dion will be. Dion will be overcome with happy in a way that none of us mere mortals can even begin to understand.

Celine overcome with happy
Image: Giphy

In conclusion, America, you're welcome. All we ask is that you treat the strong-yet-incredibly-delicate pride of Canada with the reverence and respect she deserves.

And remember, we want her back.

Michaela Bates Keilen's Fertility Struggle Gets to the Heart of Being a Woman

$

Watching tonight's episode of Bringing Up Bates led me to ponder one of those larger-than-life, can-never-really-be-answered questions. (You know, a question like, "What is the true meaning of life?"). Has biology stacked the cards against women? And does society add to those pressures, only making the journey to motherhood seem, at times, too overwhelming to bear?

More: The Bates family motto is one we should all adopt

Hear me out.

For the working mom

For women who want to be mothers and career-minded individuals, there is an uphill battle to find the balance between the two.

Biology chooses our sex — and with sex comes expectations and stereotypes.

These challenges aren't new. Many women know the crushing feeling biology brings, especially right now in the heat of politics, new-wave feminism and outspoken cries for equality.

Personally, I fall into this category of women. As a career-minded woman who wants to have it all... eventually... even I am overwhelmed by the possibility of making it all work. How the heck am I supposed to raise a couple of kids and conquer the world unless I'm a millionaire with a few nannies? Women do it. I know. But I'm pretty sure they're superheroes, some kind of otherworldly anomaly.

More: Check out Bringing Up Bates' Whitney and Erin Bates' post-baby bodies

There is some help for women who want to find that balance, i.e., extended maternity leave, women's conferences, equal pay efforts... oh, and affordable and readily available birth control... for now. But having children and being a successful businesswoman only makes that glass ceiling seem so much higher when you consider that having children in and of itself is a full-time job.

For the woman who's only ever dreamed of being a mom

Michaela Bates Keilen is one of those women who's dream is to be a mom above all else.

The great part about modern society in the United States is that whether you want to be a stay-at-home mom or take over the business world, you have the choice. Unfortunately, neither route is easy, as Keilen is discovering firsthand. Just because Keilen isn't struggling to decide between a career and motherhood doesn't mean biology isn't presenting her with obstacles that are just as challenging.

She and her husband Brandon Keilen are having fertility issues.

Luckily, just as there is help for women climbing the ladder in the business world, there are new options for women trying to get pregnant. But neither are fail-safes.

More: Bringing Up Bates family is about to add another baby to the mix

There's a reason child bearing has always been seen as a woman's battlefield. The struggle is real and painful and difficult and sometimes seems insurmountable.

Pair a career and some women's desire to have children with our continued fight for equal rights, and it's no wonder a lot of women are at that breaking point right now in the United States. How can we be expected to fight the childbearing fight while also trying to overcome inequality and politicians' desires to have a say in what we do or don't do with our bodies?

Do you think biology has stacked the cards against women or is it society that posses the biggest threat?

The Bachelor Prediction: Will Corinne Make It Through the Date?

$

Not to turn to ye ol' Bachelor cliché, but what the heck? This was the most dramatic two-on-one date ever.

More: The Bachelor's Corinne actually had a point about that Taylor 'tude

And we haven't even gotten to see the end of it because The Bachelor, apparently, loves to torture us all almost as much as Corinne loves stabbing pins into her new Taylor voodoo doll.

Look, there is just no way this whole scenario is going to go well for Taylor. That doesn't mean I don't feel like I can't wait to watch it unfold.

I also really don't think there's any way Nick Viall is going to take the advice of the embittered woman he just sent home and decide to take Corinne's rose back. Sorry, it ain't gonna happen. There's no way.

More: This season's Bachelor contestants take "wrong reasons" to a whole new level

Here's what I do think will go down.

Taylor will show up and whine to Nick about how much she hates Corinne and how Corinne lied and how Corinne is all wrong for him, etc., etc., etc. Nick will thank her for letting him know. They'll hug, super awkwardly. She'll leave. Nick and Corinne will have some serious conversations about what Corinne wants, and they'll go home after making out some more.

Once the ladies realize Corinne is staying over Taylor, they will lose their shit. Hence, the sneak peek we saw for next week.

Let's take a moment to analyze what's happening in this teaser.

"I don't think anyone was really expecting to see two people go home on the two on one," someone, maybe Jasmine, says over scenes of luggage being taken away from the house. My guess is this is some clever camera trick making us think Corinne will leave as well, when really, the girls are just at the house discussing what they think will happen on the date, not knowing the outcome yet.

"He's a grown-ass man. He's done this three times. I wanna, like, choke him," Jasmine then says to the cameras. I'm assuming she's referring the fact that he's continually picked Corinne despite the warnings against her.

More: Corinne's mom refuses to believe her daughter got naked on The Bachelor

Then cue the tears. Lots of them. Even from Nick. Especially from Nick.

"I just want to be honest because, um, I just kind of felt like I had a new low," Nick says between the tears, "because I think my biggest fear right now is, like, is the same thing going to happen? I really want this to work out, but I want it to be real. I want it to be right."

This statement again seems obvious. Nick is scared that he'll be rejected like he was with Andi Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe.

I think this one can be explained away too, though. Most, if not all, Bachelors and Bachelorettes go through a period of self-doubt during the season. That's what makes the happy finale all the more rewarding. If the story doesn't have a struggle then it starts to drag. Oh, hey reality TV; I see you.

All in all, I doubt the end to the two-on-one date is really going to be as dramatic as we all think (and secretly hope for because, let's be real, we're monsters for drama.)

Corinne will most likely, eventually, have her downfall, but I don't think it will be next week.

How do you think next week's episode will go down?

Ellen DeGeneres Schooled President Trump on the Fishy Politics of Finding Dory

If anyone was going to hit the nail right on the head about the ridiculousness of the immigration ban, it was going to be Ellen DeGeneres. Right? DeGeneres hit out at President Trump on Monday following an intense weekend of protesting over Trump's immigration ban. Not one to remain quiet about such matters, DeGeneres seized on the opportunity to connect Finding Dory, the film Trump chose to screen at the White House over the weekend and a film which stars DeGeneres, to the immigration ban. However, DeGeneres did it in her uniquely sly way and did it with such aplomb that it should be the one shareable, teachable moment you can spread around right now.

More: Ellen DeGeneres is not here for Kim Burrell's homophobia

The beauty of DeGeneres' comedy is that she is able to make observations about the world in such a way that even the most unlikely things take on a whole new meaning. Such was the case when she decided to discuss the plot of Finding Dory at the top of Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. While covering the events of the weekend, which included President's Trump's immigration ban and the fact that the first film he screened at the White House was Finding Dory.

"I don't get political, but I will say that I am against one of those things," DeGeneres quipped. She continued: "Like I said, I don't like to get political, so I'm not going to talk about the travel ban I'm going to talk about the very nonpolitical, family-friendly, People's Choice Award-winning Finding Dory." I think it's safe to say we all know where this is going right?

More: Ellen DeGeneres is Hollywood's secret mean girl according to Kathy Griffin

DeGeneres proceeded to summarize the plot of Finding Dory, but do it in such a fashion that it became an immigration story. In doing so, she schooled President Trump on exactly the fact that the film he enjoyed over the weekend had a deeper meaning than it superficially appears to.

"Dory lives in Australia. Her parents live in America. [...] Dory arrives in America with her friends Marlin and Nemo. She ends up at the Marine Life Institute behind a large wall and they all have to get over the wall. You won't believe it, but that wall has almost no effect on keeping them out." It was at this point that the audience erupted into cheers and applause because with the mention of a wall (something Trump has proposed building in order to curtail illegal immigration), DeGeneres' point was beginning to crystallize.

Finding Dory GIF
Image: Giphy

But it was DeGeneres' final observation about Finding Dory that really hit home. "Even though Dory gets into America, she gets separated from her family. But, the other animals help Dory. Animals that don’t even need her, animals that don’t even have anything in common with her. They help her even though they’re completely different colors because that’s what you do when you see someone in need: You help them."

More: Finding Dory might be beating Frozen 2 to the LGBT punch

DeGeneres deserves all the applause right now because she absolutely nailed it.
